Radiation Oncology Physician Job Description

Radiation oncologists are specialized physicians who utilize ionizing radiation — techniques like megavoltage X-rays or radionuclides — in the treatment of cancer. As one of the three primary specialties involved with cancer treatment, radiation is given to patients as a curative modality, either as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with surgeries and/or chemotherapy techniques. It is also possible that such treatments are used palliative, as a way to relieve the symptoms of patients with incurable cancers. Inversely, radiation oncologists may also use these treatments to treat certain benign diseases and benign tumors. Professionals in this field work closely with other physicians such as surgical oncologists, interventional radiologists, medical oncologists, and internal medicine subspecialists to produce the best outcomes possible for patients.

Education Requirements for Radiation Oncology Physician Jobs

As far as training is concerned, oncology is one of the most labor-intensive specialties in modern medicine. For radiation oncologists looking to practice in the United States, individuals must complete a four-year residency in the proper professional setting, in addition to having first held an internship with a degree from the proper undergraduate program. During these four years of post-graduate experience, residents will gain skills and knowledge regarding clinical oncology, the physics and biology of ionizing radiation, and the treatment of cancer patients using radiation. The final steps to becoming a radiation oncologist include undergoing certification by either the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) for those with M.D. degrees. For holders of D.O. degrees, certification is possible through the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology (AOBR). As a highly-specialized profession, radiation oncologists can expect to make an average of $418,228 per year with jobs found across the United States!
