As a healthcare professional, you’ve probably come across a variety of health trends this year. While many emerged, only a few will be considered successful, and even fewer will stick around for the long run. Whether it was a new diet, a new exercise craze, or a new product promising to change how you look at health, 2017 had a lot of health trends to offer. However, it’s time to look at the bad health trends that we want to leave behind. Below are just a few fads, products, and trends that we want to leave behind in 2017.

Bottled Fruit Smoothies and Juices

You’ve probably had patients that come in and swear by their new healthy juice and smoothie diet. Maybe you’ve even hopped on the train yourself. When it comes to bad health trends to leave in the past, this should be near the top of your list. The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugars. For most American women, that means eating no more than 100 calories from sugar per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For men, it’s 150 calories per day or about 9 teaspoons. Unfortunately, these prepackaged drinks can contain more than the daily-recommended amount in just one bottle. If your patients want a healthy alternative, tell them to make their own juices and smoothies at home. Add a teaspoon of chia seeds or flax to give them a fiber boost and omega 3s and other nutrients, using any fruits you enjoy.

GMO Panic

One of the most polarizing topics in 2017 was the continued rise of GMOs. While this might not affect your patients in the short-term, it’s still something that you’ll want to keep on your radar. We’re recommending that you keep the panic to a minimum and leave the stress and anxiety about GMOs behind. When it comes to bad health trends, we simply can’t make the claim that GMOs are harmful. President Barack Obama signed a bill into law in July, which required food companies to label genetically modified ingredients. However, a recent analysis of over 1,000 studies should put panic to rest surrounding the issue of whether or not GMOs are safe to consume: The research concluded that there are no safety reasons to label GMOs in food. While there are other concerns when it comes to the morality of GMOs and the treatment of animals, human consumption is not a concern.

Cutting Calories to the Extreme

You might see some patients battling this issue, but it’s one of the bad health trends to leave in 2017. Most weight loss comes from burning more calories than you consume. However, if it’s taken to the extreme, it can become quite dangerous. Extreme calory cutting can actually impede weight loss because it forces the body to conserve energy. This can lead to eventual weight gain, nutrient deficiencies, bingeing, depressive moods, increased stress and, in severe cases, organ problems. Make sure both you and your patients are taking the necessary steps to properly put together a diet plan. While it’s okay to want to lose weight for your New Year’s resolution, it’s important to do it safely.

Detox Diets

While we’re not saying that all detox diets are bad health trends to leave in 2017, it’s important to realize how they work. A couple weeks of detoxing a year won’t have a lasting difference in your health. One of the big misconceptions is that you can cleanse for one or two weeks a year and go back to your normal diet. This simply will not work. If you or your patients choose a detox plan, make sure they continue to practice healthy eating habits and exercise.
