Coffee Alternatives: The Caffeine Crisis

It’s no secret that coffee, or caffeine in any form for that matter, can be a physician’s best friend. However, too much coffee or caffeine can be very detrimental to your health. While we realize that long shifts and a stressful work environment can often make it tough to get the proper amount of sleep. Relying on coffee and other caffeinated beverages can cause muscle tremors, heart palpitations, and various stomach issues. Luckily, there are a variety of coffee alternatives you can take advantage of to ensure that you’re performing at the optimal level. Here are just a few suggestions when it comes to putting down the coffee and picking up a better alternative.

1. Teas

Many physicians are leaning towards tea when it comes to finding coffee alternatives. Tea like Green Tea, Reishi Mushroom Tea, and Yerba Mate are great alternatives to coffee and will still allow you to get that much-needed energy boost. Yerba mate is the good alternative to coffee for those who can’t start the day without a cup o’ caffeine. Providing the same buzz that coffee gives, Yerba Mate is preferred by many as it’s packed with nutrients, too. Mate is made from the naturally caffeinated leaves of the celebrated South American rainforest holly tree. This alternative also is known to minimize that crash that many coffee drinkers experience as well. It’s a great drink that can be enjoyed all throughout the year and is certainly a healthier choice.

2. Coconut Water

Along with tea, coconut water is another rapidly growing coffee alternative. This cleaner, more nutritious alternative has been growing in popularity over the last few decades because of its natural boost of energy. Coconut water is naturally sweet, contains bioactive enzymes and is chock full of rehydrating electrolytes, which makes it a good replacement for sugary sports drinks.

3. Exercise

Many assume that you need to some sort of drink or snack to replace the typical boost you receive from coffee. However, some routine exercise can actually go a long way to boost your energy throughout the day. While we realize that you probably do a lot of walking and moving around during your shift. A morning jog or stretching can help you tackle the day head-on. Exercise releases endorphins that allow your body to feel energized, and more importantly, happy. Not only will you feel energized, but you’ll be practicing some of the healthy habits you preach as well.

4. Smoothies

Those who miss the sweetness of a latte or flavored coffee drink might want to try a smoothie. Oftentimes, that afternoon slump you might be experiencing isn’t from lack of sleep, but it’s because your blood sugar is low. A fruity smoothie will provide the sugary boost you desire while still maintaining itself as a healthy alternative. Another tip your coffee alternatives are to include nuts into your smoothie. Packed full of protein, nuts can provide a much-needed boost when you’re hitting that afternoon lull. Luckily, smoothies are a sweet alternative to the traditional coffee drink.

5. Wheatgrass

What better way to start the morning that with a shot? Okay, not THAT kind of shot; a wheatgrass shot. This healthy alternative has recently emerged within the last few years and is great for those physicians who need that boost of energy immediately. This natural energizer is known as a liquid shot of essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. Some people don’t mind the taste and others do, but all agree that wheatgrass is one of the most nourishing juices.

So, before you grab that cup of coffee before your next shift, make sure that you’re thinking about these great coffee alternatives.
