In order to become an addiction medicine physician or an addiction psychiatrist, individuals must hold either subspecialty board certification in addiction medicine from the American Board of Preventative Medicine (ABPM), subspecialty board certification in addiction psychiatry from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), board certification in addiction medicine from the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM), or a Certificate of Added Qualification in Addiction Medicine provided by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Each of these certifications demonstrate that someone has received the proper education, experience, and has passed the proper exams in order to provide patients with preventative screenings and intervening treatments for substance abuse and addiction. Addiction medicine physicians can earn anywhere from $93,000 - $264,085 a year depending on their level of experience and credentials.
